Trashy vs. Classy

via

Modesty.  A concept so many girls have not been taught, or don't wish to be taught.  Today, you're considered good and modest as long as all the absolutely necessary parts are covered.  I remember flipping through channels a few years ago when I came across a fashion station.  I paused on the channel, waiting.  Two people were sitting at a computer, apparently looking at pictures that were not visible to the audience.  The picture they were looking at displayed someone's "hoo-hah," as they called it, or lady part, for lack of a better word.  Before clicking away to the next, hopefully better channel, I heard one of the people cry indignantly, "that's not even her [lady part]! That's mine!" This comment was quickly followed by a remark from the second person, saying, "that's your [lady part]? Wow, it's gorgeous!"

And then I changed the channel.

Isn't it hard to believe that barely 50 years have gone by, and the ideas of modesty and dignity have been warped almost completely from what they were? In the 1950s women wore dresses no shorter than just past the knee--anything shorter was an anomaly, and not necessarily a good one.  Today girls age ten are wearing "booty shorts" which, guess what, show parts of the booty.

The meaning behind modesty has disappeared with all the rest of the clothes.  Modesty isn't just about covering the necessary parts--it's about self-respect.  We live in a time when women have more say in the world than they've ever had in history--we are free to study whatever we want, work wherever we want, and voice our opinions however we wish (like on a blog!).  Why, then, would we want to cheapen ourselves so that we're nothing more than bodies?  We send a message with everything we wear; by wearing skimpy clothing, we're saying: I am a body--look at me and desire me.  No one looks at a scantily clad girl and thinks, "I bet she's really smart," or "She looks like a strong and capable person." When you dress modestly, you send the message of: I am a body, yes, but I am also a woman of worth...a woman with brains and dignity.

You want a good guy? Dress like a good girl.  You want a shallow player?  The booty shorts are on sale.  Aisle five.

Reclaiming modesty is a necessity, but we don't need to go back to the 50s completely--we can update it a bit so that we're still fashionable while being modest.  Here are a few examples of how to do this:
